FIREARM HISTORY AND FEATURES:
The Desert Eagle is a gas-operated, semi-automatic pistol first designed and developed by Magnum Research Inc. in 1983.
It was later further refined and manufactured by Israel Military Industries (IMI) until 1995.
Since then manufacturing has been shifted from Saco Defense in Maine, back to Israel under Israel Weapon Industries, and then back to MRI’s facility in the USA, and eventually to Kahr Arms (who acquired Magnum Research Inc. in 2010).
The Desert Eagle was designed primarily for hunting, target shooting, and silhouette shooting
It was the first semi-automatic pistol design to successfully chamber and fire the rimmed .357 Magnum cartridge, as well as later (also first) the .44 Magnum cartridge, the .41 Magnum cartridge, and lastly the .50 Action Express cartridge, also making it the world’s largest production, semi-automatic pistol.
The pistol is a conventional, hammer-fired, double-action/single-action design with a slide-mounted, ambidextrous manual safety lever and conventional slide-stop and magazine release levers.
The Desert Eagle uses a gas-operated cycling system and rotating bolt normally found in rifles like the AR-15, as opposed to the short recoil or blowback designs most commonly seen in semi-automatic pistols.
This was done in order to best utilize and control the high volume of expanding gases created by the large, magnum calibers.
Due to this system however, it is recommend that only jacketed bullets are used in order to prevent fouling and clogging from lead particles (of non-jacketed bullets).
The Desert Eagle is fed from a detachable box magazine, with a capacity of 9 rounds in .357 Magnum, 8 rounds in .44 Magnum, and 7 rounds in .50 Action Express.
The Desert Eagle’s barrel features polygonal rifling, and switching to another chambering requires only that the correct barrel, bolt assembly, and magazine be installed, making cartridge conversion relatively quick and easy.
