FIREARM HISTORY AND FEATURES:
The USP (Universelle Selbstladepistole or ‘universal self-loading pistol’) is a semi-automatic pistol developed in Germany by Heckler & Koch GmbH from 1989-1992, and first released in 1993.
It was designed primarily for the United States commercial and law enforcement markets, with USP prototypes submitted for rigorous testing in the Offensive Handgun Weapon System (OHWS) program requested by the U.S. Special Operations Command.
Based on feedback from the OHWS trials, and the design of the USP was finalized in December of the same year.
The first model introduced was the USP40 (the base version) chambered in .40 S&W, followed soon by the USP9 (9mmP), and later the USP45 (.45 ACP).
By using a modular approach to the internal components the control functions of the USP can be switched from the left to the right side of the pistol for left-handed shooters.
The USP can also be converted from one type of trigger/firing mode to another, including combinations of double-action and single-action (DA/SA) and double-action only (DAO) configurations.
In addition to a wide selection of firing modes, the USP has an ambidextrous magazine release lever that is shielded by the trigger guard from inadvertent actuation.
Other variants of the USP were later produced, starting with the USP Compact in 1996, followed by the USP Tactical, USP Expert, USP Match, USP Elite.
The Compact version was also made available chambered in .357 Sig (the only variant to offer this caliber).
The USP was adopted into service by the German armed forces in 1994 and designated as the P8, while many German State Police forces also adopted a version of the USP Compact, designated as the P10.
In 2004 the USP Compact/LEM (Law Enforcement Modification) was selected as one of a range of H&K pistols to be used by the United States Department of Homeland Security.
This particular USP is a standard/duty size version chambered in .45 ACP, with a burnt-bronze finished slide.
